She will also be attending the studio at Quai des arts in Carleton-sur-Mer on Sunday, May 21 at 7:30<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"> p.m. to present her documentary<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"><i>N\u00dbJEN, <\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"><i>the Women Soldiers<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"> profiles female fighters from Syrian Kurdistan who defeated the Islamic State (IS). In March 2019, with the help of the international coalition, the Syrian Democratic <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">Forces (SDF) won the battle against the <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">IS in Syria. A short time later, Zayn\u00ea Akyol traveled to these hazardous areas to film her documentary <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"><i>ROJEK<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"> and capture on silver film the women \u2013 Kurds, Arabs, Assyrian, and others \u2013 engaged in protecting their land.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">The exhibit presents another face of that war, the face of women of the Middle East who organize and resist those who are sowing terror around the world. It displays a collection of unique images of female soldiers who with extraordinary courage succeeded in overthrowing the Islamic State caliphate.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">Screening throughout the Festival international de journalisme de Carleton-sur-Mer, from May 19 to 21, 2023, <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"><i>N\u00dbJEN, the Women Soldiers <\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">will also be presented from July 15 to September 30, 2023 <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">at the 14th edition of Rencontres de la photographie en Gasp\u00e9sie (location to be confirmed).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"><i><b>Gul\u00eestan<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"><i><b>, Land of Roses<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">Released in 2016, <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"><i>Gul\u00eestan<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"><i>, Land of Roses<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"> is Zayn\u00ea Akyol\u2019s first feature film. What it reveals is the day-to-day lives of the female Kurdish guerrillas in the Kurdistan Workers\u2019 Party (PKK) in the mountains and desert of <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">Kurdistan. These revolutionary women fighting the Daesh (the Islamic State) openly lay bare their thoughts and their ideals, and provide an intimate immersion in their world.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">Selected by over 80 international festivals, this documentary has been nominated some 50 times and been the recipient of 12 distinctions, including the prestigious Doc Alliance Award from the Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n<p lang=\"fr-CA\" align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"><b>About the artist<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n<p lang=\"fr-CA\" align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">Zayn\u00ea Akyol holds bachelor\u2019s and master\u2019s degrees in communication from Universit\u00e9 du Qu\u00e9bec \u00e0 Montr\u00e9al, with a concentration in film. Her interest in image and politics also led her to photography. Her first widely seen exhibition, <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"><i>Rojek\u00ea, One Day <\/i><\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">(2016)<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"><i>,<\/i><\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> recounts the resistance through the faces of women guerillas from Iraqi Kurdistan at the start of the war against the Islamic State. With <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"><i>N\u00dbJEN, the Women Soldiers<\/i><\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">, the artist presents a second series of photographs on the subject of war in the female gender. In 2022, Zayn\u00ea Akyol <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">directed her second feature-length documentary<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">, <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"><i>ROJEK<\/i><\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">.
